Connectors were corroded so I cut them off and cut back the wire a bit and replaced with tinned copper connectors punched like the parts guy said negative and positive Still turns over slowly like a weak battery. The car will not start yet I had it the battery charged and it cranked right up.

Any excessive resistance of a cable will dissipate heat.

. RedRooster I think you may have hit on the problem. Usually if your negative battery cable is getting hot while the engine is running or shortly after turning off the engine then there is something causing resistance in the cable that is creating heat. The positive battery cable goes to the starter alternator and electrical system.

Car battery terminals will only get hot if one of the cables connected to them gets hot or there is a short somewhere in the circuit causing the cables to get hot. Aluminum jumper cables require more electricity to transfer power from one battery to the other terminal. It sounds like you have a drain somewhere else too.

2 Oct 22 2006. To avoid your jumper cables from getting damaged you need to ensure that they are stored in good condition when not in use. Eventually the heat discolors the jacket.

One may also ask what would cause a negative battery cable to melt. What do you call good battery voltage. Unplug the alternator and see if it goes out.

Bad connections build resistance and resistance to current flow builds heat. Nothing happened to negative side. Trying to start on the rabbit ears.

Wed May 30 2018 500 am Post subject. This is why periodically you need to remove the battery cable. The cables and solenoid will get very hot and may even start smoking.

Negative side of battery cables getting very hot Disconnect the red wire from the starter solinoid to the starter and crank key like you are going to start it.

You may have a poor ground connection. Negative battery cable gets HOT. Turns over real slow like battery dead.

Its at full charge and last tested about 60 days ago it was in perfect condition. That resistance creates heat and reduces the amount of voltage getting to the starter. Only show this user.

1 the connection of the cable to the lug is poor or corroded 2 the cable is too small for the current flowing thru it. If that doesnt help you may have a bad solenoid. Keep doing this and see if you can generate any heat.

The resistance create the heat it. The easiest and quickest fix would be a larger starter lead from the battery to the starter. The positive bolt on the battery turned bright red instantly and the power cable is hot.

Im having a problem with starting my car. The fix is to either remove the cap and clean up the bolt or else re-locate the cable to one of the starter mounting. Resistance heat.

But could it be that i need to make one more ground cable to the starters housing as now the only ground cable goes direct to the frame. Also since it continued to get that hot Im fairly certain the short is on the battery to starter cable or the starter to mega fuse cable. The only reason for the terminal to melt is a bad connection.

The positive battery cable gets red hot and is turning black from the overheating and smoking. Once copper gets too hot it will always have an increased resistance. Check your ground from the battery also clean them all.

The battery cable is probably getting hot because the amperage is passing through it directly probably with little or no load ie. The wire that goes from the sylinoid to the starter is so hot you can hardly touch it and I got burned where it connects to the starter because I accidentally bumped it. The starter button wasnt working at that time so I was using a screwdriver to jump.

If not keep looking to the starter. That corrosion also reduces the charging voltage needed to bring the battery up to full charge. You could also have a starter that is drawing excessive amount of current and that too could cause the cables to get hot.

If not keep looking to the starter. So either there is a fault both with the starter and wrong fuse or the terminal is badly connected. If the copper gets corroded under the insulating jacket copper oxide has a higher resistance than pure copper and the proportion of power dissipated inside the cables goes up.

I checked the battery because I had to jump start it with my truck and it read 126v. If its getting hot at the starter terminal its most likely a corroded bolt inside the starter end cap. If the starter solenoid welds the contacts then the starter will attempt to run anytime there is power in the battery.

The battery posts get very hot along with the cables and the starter itself. I put the battery back in and tried to start it today. RichG May 23 2011.

Battery cables get very hot. It is a new battery cable and lead. I bought a new battery for my bike and when i try to start The cables are getting hot same the battery and starter motor.

Any issue with any of the little wires would see them burn up into oblivion in a few seconds with the current the battery can deliver thru the fat cables.

Ive seen this happen with starter cables before. You could take a. For the battery cables to overheat there has to be an issue with the cables themselves or the starter.

Ive seen that many times - the bolt is steel and the end cap is aluminum. The terminals on a lead acid battery can even melt from the heat. The temporary fix for a welded starter solenoid is to disconnect the battery and smack the back of the solenoid housing a sharp blow with a hammer.

Why is the Negative Battery Cable Hot. I have a 1990 Mercury Topaz that is refusing to start. A hot cable and battery can cause injury.

My old battery was a 19 amp and now i got a 16 amp. Disconnect the positive cable from the battery terminal and use a test light to bridge the circuit. As more electricity passes through the wires the cables get hot and start to smoke.

If one cable is only getting hot then you need to clean the connection on both ends andor replace the cable. Your starter probably has a body ground instead of a wire grounding it. I would make certain you have a FULLY charged battery and all good clean connections and ground paths.

If the cable or cable end is getting hot enough to damage the solenoid there are two likely issues.
